When Jamie Gold started looking for a greener way to work in the dry cleaning business, he ended up finding a better product altogether. Gold is the founder of Cleaner Innovations, the parent company of his new product, BerryPlus laundry soap, made from the fruit of a tree that’s been used for thousands of years in Asia for cleaning purposes. “We stumbled across the soapberry, and were able to figure out how to extract the ‘saponin,’ which is the cleaning power contained in it,” Gold says. “We were further able to concentrate it so users can do a whole load of laundry with less than half a teaspoon of the product.” Launched last summer, BerryPlus was first introduced on college campuses to help build word of mouth. “College kids are a perfect audience,” Gold says. “They have greater green sensitivities and are into convenience and cool packaging, all of which BerryPlus has.”
Available in three different sizes, a package of two BerryPlus vials wholesales for $1, with an MSRP of $2. “It’s positioned as an impulse or trial size item,” Gold says. A pack of 10 wholesales for $2.50 and retails for $4 to $5, and a pack of 20 sells at wholesale for $5, with an MSRP of $8 to $10. Cleaner Innovations is currently selling through small and independent retailers, in bookstores, and online at Alice.com. “BerryPlus makes perfect sense for these changing times,” Gold says. “It’s Earth friendly, made out of berries, comes in premeasured doses, and has no chemical additives. We expect it’s going to change the way people do laundry.”
