No matter what kind of products are primarily sold in shops, more and more retailers are finding ways to integrate health and beauty merchandise onto their shelves. The growth of the industry is remarkable, reaching $18.8 billion in 2018, a 6 percent sales increase over 2017, according to The NPD Group.

“More and more people are becoming conscious about the things they consume and put on their bodies,” Christie Martel, owner of The House Phoenix, said. “As a business, it costs us more money to make products that contain vegan, sustainably grown ingredients wrapped in biodegradable packaging, but we think it’s worth it and we think it’s the right thing to do. Based on the enthusiasm of our customers, I see a huge market for cosmetic products that are ‘good for you, the animals and the environment.’”

Aromatherapy & Oil Diffusers

“Oil diffusers are very popular. All the retailers have them, and if they don’t, then they want them,” Marcelo Moreno, owner of Aromar, said. “It started out as a specialty item and then became very popular, and it is what we sell the most of today.” Almost every single store out there, big and small, has a section selling candles and diffusers. It is such a huge category and consumers can’t get enough of the stuff. Mordor Intelligence reports that the global aromatherapy diffuser market is projected to grow at the rate of 8.8% during the forecast period, 2018 to 2023.

Bath Products

As noted by Olivia Guinaugh, a leading analyst in the Home & Personal Care sector, “The soap, bath, and shower products market continues to experience slow, yet steady growth, benefiting from strong liquid body wash sales that are compensating for struggles in the bar soap segment. Market growth can also be partially attributed to the inclusion of premium and therapeutic benefits found in liquid body wash and bath products.” Handmade soap, bath and shower products have especially been gaining traction within the past couple of years.

Beauty & Cosmetics

Skincare, hair care, make-up, perfumes, toiletries and deodorants, and oral cosmetics are the main product categories of the cosmetic market. In 2016, the U.S. was considered the most valuable beauty and personal care market in the world, generating approximately 84 billion U.S. dollars in revenue that year, according to Statista. The Benchmarking Company also did a study with over 7,000 U.S. beauty consumers and found that 99% had purchased skin, color and hair products in the past year. With that many customers buying beauty products, retailers are not going to want to miss out on those sales.
