UVSunSense is a three year old company offering one product that is selling very well in the marketplace. “The UVSunSense wristband measures how much sun exposure your skin has had, and tells you when it’s time to apply more sunscreen or get out of the sun,” says Jon Horovitz, cofounder and managing member of the company. Available in 20 countries around the world, the UVSunSense band can be found at traditional retailers, as well as drug and food chains, independent pharmacies, dermatologists’ offices and online. “We can also customize the bands with a brand name, which is very popular with resorts, hotels and other such businesses,” Horovitz adds.
The wristband is embedded with photo chromatic dyes, which are calibrated to match type 2 skin, the kind found in fair-skinned people and children of all skin types. “When exposed to ultraviolet light and used in conjunction with a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, the band will change color to let the wearer know when to reapply sun block or get out of the sun,” Horovitz says. “The band mimics the absorption of the UV that the skin is getting.” While declining to publicly disclose the wholesale pricing of UVSunSense, Horovitz says it retails for $6.99 for a seven pack of the bands, with a minimum order of 24 packs. Clip strips and countertop displays are included, volume discounts are available for larger orders, and the company is shortly coming out with a five pack that retails for $4.99. “For retailers who sell to sun worshippers, it makes sense to keep the UVSunSense wristband near the register,” Horovitz says. “People see it, they get it, and they buy it.”
