NOVELTY GIFT COMPANY distributes Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters, toys that are gaining publicity as this year’s Tickle Me Elmo and Cabbage Patch Dolls. These plush animals are the same size, and have the look and feel of real hamsters. Unlike real hamsters, however, the Zhu Zhu version can’t bite, create a mess, or die. Yet these “go go pets” have artificial intelligence that makes them interactive. For example, each of the four Zhu Zhu designs has its own set of more than 40 different sound effects, including distinctive squeaks, chirps and talking sounds.
In addition, they are mobile. They skitter just like a real hamster. There are a series of stand alone accessories, including a funhouse and mini ball, wheel and tunnel, spiral slide and ramp, and hamstermobile and garage, to exercise their mobility. Component pieces allow players to create Zhu Zhu playgrounds resembling the Lionel train landscapes of long ago. There are also beds, bags, pouches and other accessories for the little creatures.
Zhu Zhu Hamsters come in a choice of grey, white, beige and cream. Each has a name and a distinct personality. They come individually packaged in a see through box that allows a trial push to raise a chirp. The minimum order of these single packs is 24 pieces, and the wholesale cost is $7.50. Retail prices cover a big range, but in general are near $20.
The funhouse, which includes one Zhu Zhu Hamster and a ball, in addition to the circular track, is offered in a case of 12 pieces, for a wholesale cost of $12.50 each. The wheel and tunnel, hamstermobile and garage, and spiral slide and ramp are all sold separately. Each is offered in a case of 24 pieces, and the wholesale price is $8.50. Suggested retail prices are about double wholesale cost. More than $10 million in television advertising is planned to promote Zhu Zhu Hamsters during this fourth quarter.
