Keeping little kids dressed well without breaking the bank can be a challenge, but that’s what led Jennifer Clark to invent Button Caps. “My daughter had worn the same overcoat for Halloween and Thanksgiving parties, and I wanted to her to look a little more festive for Christmas, but didn’t want her wearing a pin as she was only four,” Clark says. “The coat had three big buttons, so I embroidered a holiday themed button cover with a rubber donut in back for one of the buttons, and the reaction from everyone was great!” she recalls. Folks began asking Clark where she got the cover and where they could get one, and her company Button Caps was born. “All the Button Caps are embroidered, similar to a pin, but much nicer,” Clark says. “They slide easily over a coat button via the rubber ring, or can go on a favorite hat or pair of boots as well,” she adds. Button Caps are currently being sold in various gift shops, boutiques and more, and are available in two sizes, 1.3 inches for winter coats and boots, and a one inch size that fits the buttons on denim clothing. They wholesale for $1.50 each, or $1.25 each with a minimum order of 200. Display racks are also available, with the smaller one at $15 and holding 40 Button Caps, and the larger rack at $25 holding 60.
“We have several current best sellers,” Clark says, “including the colorful ‘Groovy Peace’ cap and of course everyone’s initial. Surprisingly, the shamrock seems to be a strong seller all year long as well,” she adds. Coming up, Button Caps is about to roll out a special rubber wristband that will hold the smaller caps. The band will wholesale for 75 cents and is expected to retail for between $1.25 and $1.50. The company is also planning headbands and belts that will display the Button Caps.
