Every child wants to be the star of their own show, and now with new technology from Indiana based, Mediak, they can be. The company was started in 2002 after company President, Charles Sublett, and his wife, Junnie, saw someone at a trade show who inserted children’s names directly into pre-recorded songs. Realizing that if they could do it faster and better, they’d have a hit item, the Subletts bought out the U.S. rights for the product. Along with programmer, Darrel Walisser, they updated the software and embellished it many times over until they had a winner.
Realizing that inclusive videos would also resonate with a new generation of kids, Charles and Junnie Sublett took what they had learned from the music CDs and adapted it to DVDs, launching Mediak Personalized Audio and Video Products. With the videos, retailers can take a headshot of a child and instantly insert it into a video story starring that child. “Now retailers can take a photo from any format, including a camera card or a print, crop the image quickly, and instantly insert it into the video,” Sublett says. “It only takes about two minutes to burn the DVD for the customer, and they then get a video that’s about 20 to 25 minutes long.” The ability for a retailer to produce the finished product quickly is a big selling point, he adds.
Mediak is strictly wholesale and offers a number of options for retailers looking to get in on the craze. The company can provide everything for a turnkey operation, including equipment, startup inventory, software and an ecommerce website for about $7,000. Going to the other end of the spectrum, Mediak also offers just the proprietary software for about $1,200. But the best part is the pricing. The audios only cost the dealer $5, and the finished product retails for $19.95. Videos cost about $8 to make, but retail for $29.95. Once prospective retailers register on Mediak’s site, a staff member will contact them to work out the best possible setup. Always looking forward, Sublett and his staff are developing 3-D models of mall kiosks for a more theatrical product presentation at the point of sale.
